GAME DAY: Hurricanes Visit Hitmen Tonight at 6:00pm
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes visit the Calgary Hitmen tonight at 6:00pm at Scotiabank Saddledome in the second of eight meetings this year.
The Hurricanes (6-1-1-0) enter on a two-game winning streak after earning a convincing 7-3 victory over the Prince George Cougars on Friday. Will Sharpe and Shane Smith both scored twice while Kooper Gizowski, Noah Chadwick and Logan Wormald scored in the win while Brady Smith made 22-saves. Lethbridge enters tonight with a 1-1-0-0 record on the road this season.
The Hitmen (3-4-1-0) enter after suffering a 5-4 overtime loss to the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday night. Ben Kindel scored twice while Carter Yakemchuk and Carson Wetsch also scored in the defeat; Eric Tu made 32-saves in the setback. Calgary enters 1-0-1-0 in their last two games while having posted a 3-1-1-0 record at home this season.
Tonight will be the second of eight meetings on the year between the Hurricanes and Hitmen; Lethbridge has posted an 0-1-0-0 record against Calgary so far this season suffering their only regulation loss this year on September 29th at the ‘Dome. This year Hurricanes matched the 2001-2002 team which started 6-1-1-0 collecting 13 out of a possible 16 points. Do The Worm: Hurricanes 19-year-old forward Logan Wormald has been on a tear to start the new season. Eddy’s Ready: Brayden Edwards has been dominant since returning to the Hurricanes line up. The Abbotsford, BC, product set a career-high with 31 goals and 70 points in 2023-2024.
No Jynx: Will Sharpe has had a good start to his sophomore season in the WHL. The 17-year-old draft eligible defenceman as collected 10 points (2g-8a) in eight games while going plus-6 with six penalty minutes. Sharpe is riding a career-high four-game point streak (2g-7a) entering tonight. He had 11 points (4g-7a) in 58 games last year.
Strong PK: Lethbridge’s penalty kill has been strong to start the season. The ‘Canes PK opened the season with 11-consecutive kills before allowing a goal. The Hurricanes have gone 34-for-40 on the penalty kill for a kill rate of 85.0%, ranking second in the WHL. Lethbridge finished third on the kill during the 2023-2024 regular season with a PK% of 81.1%.
Super Six: The Hurricanes announced that six prospects including Tyden Lafournaise (MB), Reid Soper (AB), Leif Oaten (AB), Colt Carter (AB), Jake Evans (SK) and Matteo Di Stefano (BC) will all represent their Province’s at the 2024 WHL Cup. The tournament will take place in Red Deer from October 23rd until 27th.
Sweet-16: The Hurricanes currently have two 16-year-old players on their roster: Chase Petersen and Gavin Lesiuk. The pair were both second round selections by the ‘Canes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. The duo combined for four points (3g-1a) in the pre-season for the Hurricanes.
New Captain: On August 30th, the Hurricanes announced Noah Chadwick as the 32nd Captain in team history. The Toronto Maple Leaf prospect succeeds outgoing captain Joe Arntsen who served for three seasons. Chadwick served as an Alternate Captain in 2023-2024. The Saskatoon, SK, product recorded a career-high 56 points (12g-44a) in 66 games last season. He has two assists in four games so far this year.
