Giants WIn Overtime Thriller
The Vancouver Giants twice rallied from a two goal deficit and Greg Lamoureux scored the overtime winner 1:58 into the extra frame to give the Giants a 5-4 win over the Regina Pats in front of 11,476 fans, their biggest crowd of the year.
Playing game 1 of a 5 game western road swing, the Pats came out flying scoring on the power play courtesy of Thomas Frazee. 1:36 later Andrew Rieder banged in a rebound to make it 2-0. That was the end of the night for Brendan Jensen between the pipes. He was pulled in favour of Mark Segal after giving up 2 goals on 9 shots in just 8:49. The move woke up the Giants. Brendan Gallagher potted his 19th goal of the season with the man advantage to make it 2-1. They were not done there as Matt MacKay finished off an impressive passing play to tie the game at 2-2 through 20 minutes of play.
Regina restored their lead in the 2nd period as Carter Ashton beat Segal to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Ricard Blidstrand added another power play goal to put the Pats in front 4-2. Gallagher though would get his 2nd of the game and 20th of the year on Vancouver’s own power play to get the Giants back within one after two periods of play.
In the third, Nathan Burns converted a perfect pass from MacKay on a 2-on-1 to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to overtime.
After the Pats killed off a Vancouver power play in the extra frame, Greg Lamoureux scored the winner off a rebound for his 3rd of the season to give the Giants the 5-4 victory and their 13 win of the year. Segal made 17 saves to pick up his 6th win of the year.
The Giants have a week off before returning to action. They head to Alberta for a two game road trip, beginning Friday night in Edmonton versus the Oil Kings. Game time is 6:00pm (PST). Pregame show starts at 5:30pm (PST) on AM 650.
