Giants Lose In Red Deer

The Vancouver Giants had their 4 game winning streak come to an end, as the Red Deer Rebels scored 3 power play goals en route to a 5-2 victory.

Nathan Burns opened up the scoring for Vancouver just 4:06 into the game. However, before the period was out Red Deer would respond on the power play as Byron Froese picked up his 7th goal of the season to make it 1-1 through 20 minutes of play.

The Rebels added to their lead near the halfway point of the second period, as former Giant Andrej Kudrna took advantage of a Vancouver turnover and beat Mark Segal to make it 2-1 for the Rebels. Back on the power play, Red Deer would extend the lead to two goals as Froese potted his 2nd of the game. They weren’t done there, Brett Ferguson went short side on Segal to put the Rebels in front 4-1. That was the end of the night for Segal. He was replaced by Brendan Jensen after giving up 4 goals on 22 shots.

In the third period, it only took :30 for the Rebels to make it a 4 goal game. On the power play Turner Elson converted a perfect pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the home side was up 5-1. Nathan Burns would score his 2nd of the game and 3rd of the season later on the power play, but that would do it for the scoring on the night. The Giants fall 5-2 to Red Deer.

Brendan Gallagher’s 16 game point streak came to an end as he was held off the scoresheet, as was the league’s leading scorer, Craig Cunningham. The Giants are back in action tomorrow night when they take on the Oil Kings in Edmonton. Game time is 6:00pm PST. Pregame show stats at 5:30pm PST on AM 650.
