Giants Lose 6th Straight Game
The Vancouver Giants lost their season high 6th straight game, falling 8-5 to the Chilliwack Bruins Saturday night at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. The Bruins are now just one point back of Vancouver for 5th place in the Western Conference. The Giants finished the season series vs. Chilliwack 5-5-0-0.
Chilliwack scored 3:50 into the opening period to go up 1-0. Over the next 6 minutes they would add three more goals to lead 4-0 just shy of the midway point of the first period. Mark Segal was pulled after giving up 3 goals on 8 shots and was replaced by Brendan Jensen. The Giants finally got on the board on the power play as Spencer Bennett scored his 31st of the year to cut the lead to 4-1. Bennett would get another one with less than a minute to play in the period, again with the man advantage, to get Vancouver within two; however, Chilliwack scored with less then 10 seconds left in the period to make it 5-2 through 20 minutes of play.
The Bruins added to the lead early in the second period restoring their 4 goal advantage. The Giants though would not quit. Bennett pocketed his third of the night on a 5-on-3 power play to get it to 6-3. Later in the frame, just after killing off a two man advantage, Bennett scored his 4th of the night and 34th of the season shorthanded. Credit James Henry for creating the chance and doing the heavy lifting. Vancouver trailed 6-4 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, Vancouver struggled to get any offensive chances. Eventually Ryan Howse scored his 2nd of the night and 50th goal of the season to extend the Bruins lead to 7-4. Cain Franson scored his 3rd goal of the year late in regulation to get Vancouver back within two goals, but the Bruins would add an empty netter to make it an 8-5 final. Jensen took the loss in net making 22 saves.
Vancouver now has just 4 games remaining in the regular season, all of which will be played over 5 days beginning Wednesday night in Portland vs. Craig Cunningham and the Winterhawks. Game time is 7:00pm from the Rose City. The pregame show begins at 6:30pm on AM 650.
