Chiefs Win as Beckman Scores WHL-Leading Fourth Pre-Season Goal
EVERETT, Wash. — Rookie forward Adam Beckman scored his third and WHL-leading fourth goals of the pre-season to lead the way as the Spokane Chiefs earned their second win of the pre-season on Sunday afternoon in Everett.
After an early Seattle power play goal, forward Beckman put the Chiefs on the board with a power play goal of his own at 5:10 of the second period, capitalizing on a Nolan Reid assist to tie it at 1-1.
Beckman, a 17-year-old former fifth-round bantam pick by the Chiefs, hopes to impress as a rookie in the WHL this season after leading the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with 78 points (44G-34A) during the 2017-18 campaign.
Sixteen-year-old Jack Finley potted his first goal as a Spokane Chief nine minutes later, converting unassisted to give Spokane a 2-1 lead.
Beckman found the net for the second time less than three minutes after Finlay’s goal, scoring the team’s first shorthanded goal to extend the lead to 3-1 heading into the second intermission.
Seattle’s Simon Kubicek scored his second of the season, also on the power play, midway through the third period to make things interesting, but the Chiefs hung on to preserve their second exhibition win. [related_links]
Rookie Campbell Arnold started in goal for the Chiefs and turned aside 18 of 20 shots faced while fellow rookie Eric Ward started for Seattle and made 36 saves. Spokane finished 1-for-7 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.
The Chiefs’ next pre-season game will be Thursday, Sept. 6 as they face the same Thunderbirds at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash. at 3 p.m.
