Preview: Broncos meet ICE for second time in Hub Season
Regina, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos (1-5-1-0) were 43 seconds away from winning back to back games, but the Saskatoon Blades had other plans as they tied the game with the extra attacker out, and won it just 29 seconds into overtime.
Swift Current took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission thanks to goals from Owen Williams, Michael Farren and Josh Davies despite being outshot 17-6 in the opening 20 minutes.
After the Blades pulled even with a power-play goal in the second, Davies responded with a power-play goal of his own to give the Broncos a 4-3 lead heading into the final 40. It was also his 17th birthday.
Josh Filmon scored his first WHL goal with 7:59 on the clock to put the Broncos ahead 5-3 and seemingly on their way to victory, but Blake Stevenson cut the Broncos lead to 4-3 with three and a half minutes to go.
With Nolan Maier on the bench for the extra attacker, Aidan De La Gorgendiere’s wrist shot eluded all the traffic in front and beat a screened Isaac Poulter to tie the game with 43 seconds left.
In overtime, Tristen Robins took a stretch pass from his defensive zone, and pushed Mathew Ward away from the puck before scoring on a breakaway to win the game.
The Broncos opponent tonight, the Winnipeg ICE, dropped to third in the division standings after a 4-3 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Thursday. A shorthanded goal by Ridly Greig early in the third period stood up as the game winner.
The two teams met March 15, a game in which the ICE held a 5-1 lead over the Broncos late in the second period. Swift Current scored twice in quick succession to end the middle frame before pulling to within one early in the third, but that was as close as they came in a 6-4 loss.
Friday’s game marks the one-third mark of the season for the Broncos with their eighth game of the 24-game season.
