Broncos Defeat Rebels
The Swift Current Broncos took their first win over the Red Deer Rebels this season, defeating them 5-2 at the Credit Union iPlex Wednesday evening.
Broncos captain Adam Lowry opened the scoring around the midway mark of the first period to give Swift Current a 1-0 lead. But, minutes later Rebels’ Matt Bellerive would retaliate to tie the game up at one.
The game would remain locked at one until roughly eight minutes into the second frame when Richard Nedomlel would tally his first of the season to restore the Broncos one goal lead. Defenceman Reece Scarlett would follow suit shortly after to extend Swift Current’s lead to two. But, Bellerive would once again cut into Swift Current’s lead as he would record his second of the game and make it a 3-2 contest after two periods.
Around the midway mark of the third period, recently acquired Jay Merkley would capitalize on the Broncos third power play of the evening and restore their two goal lead. The Rebels would pull netminder Patrik Bartosak in the dying minutes of play for the extra attacker, but Colby Cave would score the empty-netter to seal the deal and make it a 5-2 final.
Shots were relatively even with the Broncos having a slight edge at 38-36. Swift Current went 1 for 3 on the man advantage.
BRONCO BANTER:
Brett Lernout recorded his first point of his WHL career.
Adam Lowry (1G,1A) and Coda Gordon (2A) had two point nights.
Lowry also extends his point streak to 18 games (18G,14A) recording 32 points in the process.
Gordon recorded his 50th WHL career assist.
Jay Merkley tallied his first goal as a Swift Current Bronco in his first appearance in the lineup.
Eetu Laurikainen stopped 34 of 36 shots for the win, improving his record to 14-15-2-2.
