Bronco Prospect Watch: Brycen Martin
He may have been number two in the draft, but he’s number one for the Broncos. Brycen Martin was acquired second overall by the Broncos in the recent 2011 WHL Bantam Draft (tied for the highest all time pick in Bronco franchise history).
“We thought Martin was the most dynamic defenceman in the draft so we were very happy with the selection”, says Bronco Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, Jamie Porter. “He skates and carries the puck very well, and we think he will be a valuable asset to our power play at quite a young age.”
The 6’1”, 160 pound blueliner completed his second season with the Calgary Bisons of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. In 31 games played this past season, the Calgary, AB product recorded 42 points through six goals and 36 assists (ranked 9th overall in the league). He was also named to the AMBHL’s Top Defenceman Award (along with fellow Bronco prospect, Zack Gonek). Martin and the Bisons saw a long stretch of playoff action for the second straight year as well. The 2009-10 defending Provincial Champions retained their regional and divisional championship titles, but couldn’t remain “top dog” as they fell 3-1 in a best of five series against the Edmonton SSAC in the provincial championship round.
I caught up with Brycen to hear his thoughts on the draft, being selected by the Broncos and more.
What were your thoughts on being drafted second overall?
My face was glued to the computer the whole time, ha ha. I was hoping I would be selected in the top three and when I found out I was acquired second overall by the Broncos I was thrilled!
Which NHL player do you pattern your style with?
I would have to say Drew Doughty (Los Angeles Kings defenceman). He’s a very skilled offensive and defensive defenceman.
Looking down the road, what strengths do you think you will bring to the Broncos?
I think I will bring a good first pass, strong skating ability and power play experience.
What has your training regimen been like so far in the offseason?
Right now I am doing cardio and weights twice a week and skating three times a week.
Who would you say is your hockey role model?
My Dad. He’s been there through it all. He coached me and continuously gives me tips on how to improve my game.
