Broncos Acquire Coyotes First-Round Pick from Wenatchee
Swift Current, Sask. – The Swift Current Broncos announced today that they have acquired 2004-born forward Conor Geekie from the Wenatchee Wild, in exchange for three players, and four draft picks.
The players going to Wenatchee are 2006-born defenceman Josh Fluker, 2005-born defenceman Sam Ward, and 2006-born forward Maddix McCagherty. The draft picks are two first-round picks, one in 2025, and one in 2026, along with a second-round pick in 2025. There is also a seventh-round pick in 2027.
“We’re very excited to add a player like Conor Geekie to our group,” said Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie. “His combination of size, skill, hockey sense, and compete make him one of the most impactful players in the WHL. His experience in the post-season, paired with his experience at the World Juniors will be beneficial for our group as we push to the playoffs.”
Geekie (6’4”/196lbs), out of Straithclair, Man., was the 11th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, and has played his entire WHL career with the Wenatchee Wild/Winnipeg Ice franchise. He’s played 186 regular season WHL games, scoring 88 goals, and adding 131 assists for 219 points across parts of five seasons. So far this season, Geekie has 20 goals and 29 assists for 49 points in 26 games with the Wild, good for a tie for 13th in the WHL scoring race. Geekie also has his fair share of playoff experience the last two seasons, playing in 34 games, tallying 28 points in the postseason which included a run to the WHL Championship series in 2023.
The 19-year-old forward also just finished playing for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in Sweden. He scored twice, and added an assist in five games.
Geekie is formerly the second overall pick in the 2019 WHL Entry Draft.
Fluker (6’/161lbs), out of Boissevain, Man., has played 101 career games with the Broncos after being the 7th overall pick in the 2021 WHL Entry Draft. He’s scored three goals and added 14 assists for 17 points from the back end.
Ward (5’9”/166lbs), from Kamloops, B.C., has played 62 WHL games across parts of three seasons. He’s scored one goal and added eight assists for nine points.
McCagherty (6’/169lbs), from Kelowna, B.C., a second-round WHL Draft pick by the Broncos, 25th overall in 2021. He’s played 37 games for the Broncos across parts of three seasons, scoring five goals and adding six assists for 11 points.
