Blades Stomp Out Chilliwack Bruins 7-3
It wasn’t a masterpiece, nor will it be used as a “how to” video, but the Saskatoon Blades did one thing well Wednesday night in Chilliwack…and that was score goals!
After giving up the game-opening goal to former Blades’ forward Curt Gogol, the Bridge City Bunch scored five consecutive markers and cruised to a 7-3 triumph over the Bruins.
For the second straight night, the home team started strong only to be denied repeatedly by Saskatoon goaltending. On Wednesday, it was Steven Stanford who held the Blades in until they found their scoring eye as Chilliwack had three power play chances, but the WHL’s top power play couldn’t beat Stanford on eight shots. That set the stage for two goals from Josh Nicholls, one of them short-handed, and singles from Brent Benson, Lukas Sutter and Connor Cox as Saskatoon took control of the game. Darren Dietz and former Bruins’ forward Chris Collins added third period tallies as the Blades recorded their 20th victory in 27 games and took over sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference by one point over Kootenay.
Saskatoon’s next action is Friday when they play the third of five games on the B-C road trip in Kamloops against the Blazers.
