Blades Lead the WHL
In the first of four regular season games against the Blades and Oil Kings, the Blades came out the successor, with a 4-2 Christmas victory.
It was a quiet first period with a sole goal from Oil Kings, Dylan Wruck of Saskatoon.
Saskatoon Blades then took off, scoring the next four goals of the game.
In the second period, centers Jake Trask and Brent Benson quickly opened up the scoring when they both netted their 7th goals of the season thirty seconds apart. Dziurzynski received an assist on both goals. Elliott also earned the assist on Benson’s goal, after tonight’s game Elliott is riding on a nine game point streak in which he has six goals and seven assists. The period settled at 2-1 for the Blades.
The final 20-minute frame started out a lot like the second, with two quick goals from the Blades. Stefan Elliott, who made franchise history last night as the sole-owner of most game winning goals from a defenseman, scored the first goal of the period. Benson was next with his second goal of the game, unassisted. After four goals in a row for the Blades, the Oil Kings snuck one in mid-way through the period when Jordan Hickmott made a put the puck in the back of the net.
The final game before the Christmas holidays ended in favour of the Blades, with their seventh straight win on home ice, giving them the strongest record in the WHL. Steven Stanford made 30 saves tonight to help Saskatoon double the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings by a score of 4-2.
