Tonight
The Saskatoon Blades (17-10-2-2) begin the back half of their season Friday at SaskTel Centre against the Moose Jaw Warriors (8-19-3-1). Tonight’s the Blue and Gold’s annual Teddy Bear Toss game. The Blades have won their past two straight Teddy Bear Toss contests, both against the Prince Albert Raiders. WHL graduate Easton Armstrong had the honours of sending the teddys soaring in last year’s game against the Raiders.
After ten days off from competition for the holidays, Saskatoon enters tonight hoping to snap a six-game winless skid from prior to the break. It’s the third meeting of the year between last year’s Eastern Conference Final combatants, each with a win to their name. The Blades shutout the Warriors 2-0 at home on October 12 in the first meeting of the season. Moose Jaw followed it up with a 4-0 shutout of their own at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on November 21. The Blades’ 38 points put them one point back of first place medicine Hat Tigers in the Eastern Conference, owning three games in-hand.

Who to Watch
20-year-old sniper Brandon Lisowsky scored a pair of goals in the Blades’ final game before the Christmas break. The Bridge City Bunch welcomed the Brandon Wheat Kings to SaskTel Centre on December 15 and were handed a 4-2 loss. Lisowsky’s tallies put him tied for the team-lead in goals alongside 19-year-old forward Ben Riche at 18. The Port Coquitlam, BC product also moved into sole possession of sixth place on the Blades’ all-time goal scoring list with 139 in 252 career WHL games. Lisowsky is second on the team in points with 35 (18G, 17A) and is on a nine-game point streak with eight goals and seven assists in that span.

Alternate captain Rowan Calvert and NHL draft-eligible forward Willy James are expected to draw back in to the lineup against Moose Jaw. Calvert missed the last four games before the break dealing with an upper-body injury. The 5-foot-11 winger’s nine powerplay goals is tied for third in the WHL, sitting at a new career-high 12 goals, 15 assists, and 27 points in 27 games this season. James has been out of action with an upper-body injury since the beginning of December. The Calgary, AB product has four goals and five assists in 23 games.
