Love, Dach, and Maier win gold at Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Nolan Maier, Kirby Dach, and Mitch Love lived out a dream on Saturday night as they helped Canada to win gold at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton in front of nearly 10,000 fans.
For Blades head coach Mitch Love, this is his second Gold Medal with Hockey Canada after winning it all with the U17 team in Dawson Creek, British Columbia two years ago.
Nolan Maier earned his first gold with the maple leaf on his chest as did Kirby Dach. The moment was extra special for Dach, who is from Fort Saskatchewan just outside of Edmonton.
“It’s a pretty special experience not only to win gold but to do it with this group of guys and on home soil here in Edmonton, it’s something I’ll cherish forever,” said Dach after the game Saturday. “I can’t really describe the feeling when the buzzer went, having family and friends here being so close to my home, it’s just an awesome feeling.”
Dach finished fourth in tournament scoring with 2 goals and 7 points in 5 games, contributing in every outing during the week.
In goal, Nolan Maier was instrumental in helping Canada get to the gold medal game appearing in four games with an .872SV% and 3.11GAA.
The trio of Blades will now take a few weeks to celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family before reporting back to Saskatoon for training camp at the end of August.
