A couple months ago, who among Tri-City Americans fans would have suspected that 17-year-old defenseman Sam Grist would be among the top prospects for this summer’s NHL draft?
His game was pretty raw coming out of training camp, but the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder has shown perhaps as much improvement as any player this season, becoming a physical stay-at-home defenseman often pairing with veteran Paul Sohor.
“I started off slow, but definitely I’ve gradually gotten better,” Grist said. “I don’t know if I was surprised (to be in the rankings). Maybe a little bit. But I was excited, too. It felt pretty cool to be on the list.”
Ams coach Jim Hiller knew Grist’s game would have ups and downs during his rookie campaign, but the ups have become more commonplace and the downs less prenounced.
