Brock Sutherland sees the fresh faces along the Tri-City Americans blue line, and it reminds him a bit of when he was the newcomer to the Western Hockey League.

“There are lots of times when different situations come up that I can say, ‘That used to be me,’ ” the 19-year-old defenseman said. “I definitely remember being 17. It’s tough. It’s hard.”

Sutherland has displayed a willingness to jump into the offense this year. His seven assists in 18 games nearly match his entire total from the 2009-10 season.

But his role on this team also has been to help mentor the youngsters — players such as Zachary Yuen, Spencer Humphries and Sam Grist.
