19 WHL Players on 2015 NHL Futures LIst
NHL Central Scouting released its Futures list for the 2015 NHL Draft, with 19 Western Hockey League players included among those to keep a close eye on throughout the 2014-15 season.
Among the WHL players listed by NHL Central Scouting is Mathew Barzal of the Seattle Thunderbirds. The 5’11”, 174-lb centre from Burnaby, B.C., who was the first overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, appeared in 59 games for the Thunderbirds as a 16-year-old rookie in 2013-14, scoring 14 goals and 54 points. He also played for Canada’s Under-18 team in the 2014 U-18 World Championship, winning a Bronze medal.
Also on the list is centre Nick Merkley of the Kelowna Rockets, who led all 16-year-old rookies in scoring during the 2013-14 season with 25 goals and 58 points in 66 games, and Prince George Cougars’ centre Jansen Harkins, the second overall pick from the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft who recorded 10 goals and 34 points this past season.
Red Deer Rebels’ netminder Taz Burman is the lone WHL goaltender on NHL Central Scouting’s Futures list for the 2015 NHL Draft. Burman, who appeared in 17 games as a 16-year-old for Red Deer in 2013-14, was a second-round pick, 30th overall, in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
