The First Green Cup in History: A Great Success!
For the first time in its 91-year history, the MasterCard Memorial Cup has gone green! The Organizing Committee developed a plan to apply sustainable development principles to this prestigious event.

Since the beginning of the Championship, among many other activities, the Green Brigade has been making the rounds of the various event sites to raise environmental awareness. “We talk about the various ways to be green at the Memorial Cup, like putting beer cups in the recycling bins or refilling their water bottles at the Puribec refill stations provided for that purpose,” explained an environmental volunteer.
r
In addition, there is a Green Cup booth on the Memorial Village site. “Visitors come by and ask questions. We have some good, interesting discussions,” a member of the Green Brigade said. At the booth, visitors are invited to compensate for the greenhouse gas emissions produced in connection with the event, either by making a donation and receiving a green sticker to wear, or by buying a tree. “The trees are very popular,” affirmed the Chairman of the Environment Sub-committee, Mr. Pierre Etcheverry.
r
Visitors have also noticed the beneficial effects of the Green Cup on the quality of the event. “It’s extremely clean, even if there are a lot of people during the day and a show in the evening, everything is impeccable!” remarked a local visitor to the Memorial Village.

“When I heard that it was going to be a Green Cup, I decided to contribute by going to the Colisée on my bike. Bike racks have been set up for cyclists, which is a great initiative,” said a volunteer.
r
“Before, there weren’t recycling containers in the Colisée, so we need to think about changing our habits. The Green Cup volunteers are doing a great job of reminding us that beer cups go in the blue containers! It’ll help us all continue to think green after the event,” said a long-time fan who has been attending the Océanic’s games for 14 years.
r
The Green Cup is a popular subject at the School Exhibit, where the students have worked hard on several projects that address the topic. One young man manning a booth at the Exhibit described the Green Cup very well: It’s to decrease pollution to protect the Earth.

What a great synopsis of environmental responsibility!
