Team Russia Wins SUBWAY Super Series with 5-2 win over WHL
Kamloops, B.C. – History was made on Thursday night as Team Russia was crowned champions of the 2010 SUBWAY Super Series after they skated to a 5-2 win over Team WHL in the sixth and final game of the series in Prince George, B.C.
With the win, the Russians finish the six-game series with a 4-1-1 record versus the CHL for their first series win over the CHL in the eight-year history of the event. The 2010 edition of the series was much closer than in years past with the Russians outscoring the CHL just 22-21 after having won just two games in the series – in 2004 and ’07.
Stanislav Bocharov scored three times for the Russians, who were coming off a 7-6 shootout triumph over Team WHL on Wednesday night in Kamloops. The 19-year-old Bocharov was named Russia’s Player of the Game.
Maxim Kitsyn scored his fourth goal of the tournament for the Russians while Nikita Pivtsakin also scored for Russia. Kitsyn finished the series with a series-high four goals and two assists for six points along with teammate Nikita Dvurechensky who also had six points scoring twice and adding four assists.
Brett Connolly, a Prince George product who plays for his hometown Cougars, scored for Team WHL to the delight of the 5,918 fans in attendance at CN Centre. The goal brought Team WHL some life after allowing the game’s first four goals before getting on the board just over seven minutes into the third period. Linden Vey also scored and was named Team WHL’s Player of the Game.
Dmitry Shikin turned in a solid 38-save performance to claim the win for the Russians after being pulled early in Wednesday’s contest in Kamloops after giving up two goals on three shots.
Calvin Pickard of the Seattle Thunderbirds turned aside 19 of 23 shots in a losing cause for Team WHL.
CHL players have their shot at redemption against Team Russia on Boxing Day December 26th when they face-off in the 2011 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York.
Team Canada will announce their selection camp roster on Monday November 29th.
