Two-goal third from Sawyer powers Vaughan to OHL Cup berth
The Vaughan Kings are headed back to the OHL Cup powered by Under Armour for the first time since their second-place finish in 2018, defeating the Halton Hurricanes 3-1 in a tight, low-scoring affair.
Battling to a 1-1 draw through two periods of play, Vaughan was up against a tough goaltender in Halton’s Ben Hrebik. The power play provided an opportunity for Logan Sawyer to give Vaughan an edge as he found a way to squeak the first of his two goals on the night past the netminder.
“We knew we had to get shots on net, test the goalie and find a way to beat him,” said Sawyer as he talked about scoring those two goals to help give his team the lead.
An intense and emotional game, Sawyer talked about what it meant to advance to the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour. “It feels amazing to advance to the OHL Cup. There’s tons of scouts and people here, and there’s going to be even more the rest of the week.”
With the win Vaughan will join the Lindros Division, which features the OMHA champions York-Simcoe Express, as well as the London Jr. Knights, Don Mills Flyers, and Northern Ontario Hockey Association.
