Waxers claim final tournament spot in win over Red Wings
The Markham Waxers will return to the OHL Cup Powered by Under Armour for the first time since 2010 following a 2-1 Wild Card Play-In victory over the Toronto Red Wings.
A tight-scoring game, Adam Soliman and Dallys Hibbert netted both goals for the Waxers as Nate Gillis stayed strong in Markham’s crease, backstopping his club to victory making 16 saves.
“I think we played well together as a team. There wasn’t a bad player on the ice tonight and we gave it our all. It means everything knowing that we have an extra shot now,” said Gillis.
Markham placed second in the OMHA-ETA this season, but would end up in the play-in after two consecutive losses in the OMHA championships this past weekend to Hamilton and Quinte.
Hibbert earned Player of the Game honours scoring the winning goal for Markham, while Red Wings netminder Alexander Santarsia equally impressed, earning the honours for Toronto.
Markham advances to compete in the Subban Division alongside the Toronto Marlboros, Niagara North Stars, Brantford 99ers and North York Rangers.
