Souter completes hat-trick in overtime for 3-0 Petes
Matt Souter (3) was the overtime hero as the Peterborough Petes defeated Ottawa Myers Automotive 5-4 in a thrilling finish on Tuesday afternoon.
After Colin Fitzgerald (3) knotted the score at four with 1:13 remaining, Souter was able to wire a hard wrist shot past Myers Automotive goaltender Jack Ferguson. The win pushes Peterborough to 3-0, good for first place in the entire OHL Cup standings.
“The puck just shot up to Mitch [Caleb Mitchell] and he found me back door and I was able to find the back of the net for the win,” said Souter of the winner.
Souter got his first of the game after jamming away at a loose puck in front of the Myers net, tying the game at one. Souter’s second goal came on a centering pass from Nolan Buttar after Kale Mace dumped the puck into the zone and gave the Petes a 2-1 lead. Rylan Cunningham (3) extended the lead for Peterbrough near the end of the second period.
Just seconds before the period ended, Myers Automotive was awarded a penalty shot after a Peterborough defender put their hand on top of the puck. Max Mews (1), younger brother of Ottawa 67’s defender Henry Mews, went down and faked out Petes goaltender Lewis Chatten to get his team back into the game heading to the second intermission. After Myers scored with under three minutes to play, Peterborough went on the power play and off the ensuing face-off, Colin Fitzgerald took a feed from Caleb Mitchell and went top shelf to tie the game at four.
With the win, Peterborough has locked up first place in the Subban Division with one game left to play; they’ll face the London Jr. Knights Wednesday at 1:30pm. Ottawa will need a win on Wednesday morning at 8:00am against the Niagara North Stars to keep their hopes alive.
