Oshawa hands Upper Canada first loss
The Oshawa Generals rebounded from a late first period goal against, scoring three unanswered to hand the Upper Canada Cyclones their first loss of the OHL Cup on Tuesday afternoon.
Layne Gallacher recorded a goal and assist for Oshawa in the 3-1 victory, helping the Gens improve to 2-1.
After Upper Canada’s Jack Yates (4) put the Cyclones ahead with five seconds left in the first, Jonah Gareau responded for Oshawa in the opening minute of the second, taking a pass from Cam Monk to snap home his first of the OHL Cup.
“He [Monk] grabbed the puck on the wing, came in along the half boards and drew the defence towards him and just passed it to me in front of the net and I was able to snap it home.”
Oshawa’s third goal came with under 20 seconds left in the second period when a point shot from Brady Smith was tipped by Jeramiah D’Ornellas, with the puck slipping between the pads of goaltender Nicholas Periard.
Chase Petrova stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced to record his second win of the tournament. Periard had 16 saves in the loss.
Oshawa’s final round robin game will take place at 11:45 Wednesday morning when they face the Thunder Bay Kings (0-3). Upper Canada’s (2-1) final match will be against the North York Rangers (2-0) at 7:15pm Wednesday night with two huge points up for grabs.
