Nyman nets OT winner as Vaughan outlasts Oakville in OHL Cup opener
The GTHL champion Vaughan Kings defeated the Oakville Rangers in a thrilling 4-3 overtime showdown, opening the tournament with high-intensity action.
Vaughan’s Gage Brandon (1) scored an early marker for the Kings, but the Rangers had a quick response as Ethan Belchetz (1), Ryder Carey (1), and Callum Croskery (1) all found the back of the net to make it 3-1.
The Kings would bounce back in the final frame, as Cole Emerton (1) and Ben Bowen (1) each lit the lamp to push the game into overtime.
Coming out on top as the overtime hero, Kings blueliner Zach Nyman (1) scored the game-winner to secure the comeback.
“It felt amazing coming back from a two-goal deficit. We had a lot of fun out there and are looking forward to our next game,” said Nyman.
Earning his first point of the tournament, Nyman spoke on his team’s opening performance. “I think we played really well in the first and third. We had a bit of a dip there in the second, but we had a good response and came together as a team.”
The Kings return to action on Tuesday at 5:00pm, while Oakville prepares for their second matchup of the tournament at 3:30pm Monday afternoon.
