Wolves add Flames prospect Mews in deadline deal with 67’s
The Sudbury Wolves had a strong first half and decided to add on deadline week, standing out as the league’s most active team ahead of Friday’s deadline.
Wolves vice preseident and general manager Rob Papineau made the day’s biggest move with the addition of Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews from the Ottawa 67’s, acquiring him for 17-year-old defenceman Nolan Jackson, five draft picks and three additional conditional selections.
Mews, who was the OHL’s Defenceman of the Month for December, leads all blueliners with 50 points (11-39–50) over 38 games this season, with 27 of those coming on the man advantage.
“We are very excited to add Henry Mews to our team,” said Papineau. “He is an elite defenceman with tremendous offensive skills and leadership. To make a trade like this, you have to be able to part with a good young player. We want to thank Nolan Jackson and his family for everything and wish him great success in Ottawa.”
Mews, who is from Ottawa, was selected by the 67’s with the seventh overall pick of the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. He’s amassed 38 goals, 104 assists and 142 points over 158 career OHL regular season games and was Calgary’s third round (74th overall) pick last summer.
In addition to Jackson, who was Sudbury’s second round (37th overall) pick in 2023, Ottawa fetched a pair of second round draft picks in 2027 in the deal along with thirds in 2025 and 2027. A left-shot defender from Barrie, Ont., Jackson has six assists through 35 games with Sudbury this season.
The 21-11-5-0 Wolves sit third in the Central Division while Ottawa has lost four straight, sitting fourth in the East Division at 14-16-3-5.
