The United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) took Game 1 of the 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge 4-2 Tuesday night in Calgary, AB.
Team CHL had goals from Chase Reid (Soo Greyhounds) and Mathis Preston (Spokane Chiefs) while Harrison Boettiger (Kelowna Rockets) turned away 23 shots. The USNTDP got goals from Dayne Beuker, Sammy Nelson, Wyatt Cullen and Jamie Glance while Brady Knowling stopped 42 shots.
“We were too casual going in,” Team CHL captain Caleb Malhotra (Brantford Bulldogs) said. “Nobody in there put their best foot forward and we know that so we’re going to come [back] better tomorrow.”
The Americans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first courtesy of Beuker who finished down low off of Mikey Berchild’s feed at 7:29.
The visitors doubled their lead 3:31 into the second as Nelson was credited with the goal after a scramble out front after Boettiger had turned away Luke Schairer’s initial shot.
Team CHL finally found a way through as on their 25th shot of the game, Reid buried a one-timer off of Malhotra’s feed at 13:53 of the middle stanza.
Cullen restored the USA’s two-goal lead at 6:46 of the third as he used Logan Stuart as a screen to score on a wrister from the high-slot on the power play.
Once again Team CHL cut the deficit to one as Preston’s wrister from the top of the right faceoff circle made it a 3-2 game with 6:43 to play in regulation but Glance’s empty-net goal secured the USA’s first ever win at the CHL USA Prospects Challenge.
“He’s a good player,” Malhotra said of Knowling. “Respect him. I played against him growing up. He stood in there for them [but] we didn’t put enough quality chances on him I thought but he played really well.”
Team CHL controlled the shot clock, outdoing the USA 44-26 to no avail.
Game 2 of the CHL USA Prospects Challenge takes place Wednesday night in Lethbridge, AB.
