Saturday Highlights: Dudas leads Bears into break with fifth straight win

Los Angeles Kings prospect Aidan Dudas (12, 13) had two goals and two assists, leading the Owen Sound Attack to a fifth straight win with a 6-3 road triumph in Ottawa. Kaleb Pearson (7) finished with a goal and two helpers while blueliner Sean Durzi (2) had a goal and an assist along with eight shots on goal. Defencemen Brady Lyle (5) and Trenton Bourque (2) tacked on goals for the Bears while rookie netminder Andrew MacLean turned aside 31 shots. The OHL’s first place 67’s saw their three-game winning streak snapped as Tye Felhaber (37) launched the teddy bears, scoring in an eighth straight game. Noel Hoefenmayer (6) and Mitchell Hoelscher (6) also had Ottawa goals. Austen Keating had three assists on the afternoon as the 67’s lost despite outshooting the Attack 34-24 and a tally of 20-4 in the third period. The Attack are now within six points of first place in the Midwest Division, sporting a 19-11-1-2 record while Ottawa falls to 25-5-3-1, losing in regulation on home ice for the first time since September 23rd.

GUELPH 6, MISSISSAUGA 4
A back-and-forth game went the way of the visiting Guelph Storm as they came back from a 4-2 deficit to take a 6-4 victory over the visiting Mississauga Steelheads. Cedric Ralph (11) scored the game winner with 27 seconds left in the second period on an assist from Barret Kirwin (7, 8) who scored the Storm’s Teddy Bear Toss goal and finished the afternoon with two goals and a helper. Liam Hawel (15), Owen Lalonde (2) and Nate Schnarr (18) also had Storm markers while goaltender Anthony Popovich made 35 saves. Cole Carter (23) had a goal and an assist for Mississauga while James Hardie (5), Cole Schwindt (6) and Ryan McLeod (10) also lit the lamp. Mississauga outshot Guelph 39-36 but the Storm skated away with two points as newcomer Pavel Gogolev made his debut. Guelph improves to 16-9-3-4 while Mississauga drops a third straight contest, falling to 15-14-3-0.

Keeghan Howdeshell (27, 28) scored his 13th and 14th goals in the past 10 games, leading the Soo Greyhounds to a 5-1 road win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on the Sportsnet CHL Saturday Showcase. Howdeshell also added an assist while Alex Johnston (6), Ryan O’Rourke (4) and Jacob LeGuerrier (2) also scored while rookie Ethan Taylor made 34 saves. Brandon Saigeon (22) scored Hamilton’s Teddy Bear Toss goal with 7:45 left in the second period, just a few shifts after hitting iron. The Greyhounds claim their eighth win in the past 10 games and their fourth straight on the road, finishing the first half atop the West Division with a 21-8-4-1 record. The Bulldogs drop their third straight contest, falling to 15-17-2-0.

Justin Brazeau (29, 30) had two goals and an assist while Christian Propp made 34 saves against his former club as the North Bay Battalion took a 4-1 road win in Barrie. Matthew Struthers (16) had a goal and two helpers while Luke Moncada (3) also scored. The Colts outshot the Battalion 35-25 as defenceman Tyler Tucker (8) scored Barrie’s lone goal. The Troops win their second straight to improve to 13-18-1-1. Barrie falls to 15-16-1-0.

2019 NHL Draft prospect Philip Tomasino (13, 14) had a career-high five points as the Niagara IceDogs won their 20th game of the season, defeating the visiting Oshawa Generals 6-2. Vegas Golden Knights prospect Ben Jones (14, 15, 16) netted his second hat-trick of the season while Matthew Philip (8) also found the back of the net. Stephen Dhillon made 32 saves and Los Angeles Kings prospect Akil Thomas finished with three assists. Eric Henderson (11) and Giovanni Vallati (8) both scored for the Generals as they outshot Niagara 34-30 in the loss. Niagara sits atop the Central Division with a 20-7-5-0 record while Oshawa falls to 20-11-2-0.

SAGINAW 7, SARNIA 3
The Saginaw Spirit skated to their fourth straight win, defeating the visiting Sarnia Sting 7-3 as first star Bode Wilde (8) had a goal and three assists. Albert Michnac (9, 10) launched the Teddy Bear Toss 8:11 into the first period before adding a second marker with 1:07 left in the second period. Danny Katic (2), Nicholas Porco (14), Aidan Prueter (5) and Cole Perfetti (15) also scored for Saginaw as the Spirit outshot the Sting 41-21 and went 2-for-3 on the power play. Blade Jenkins and Jake Goldowski each had a pair of assists as the Spirit put seven past former netminder Cameron Lamour. Jamieson Rees (5), Jacob Perreault (17) and Franco Sproviero (13) had Sarnia goals while defenceman Nick Grima had a pair of assists. The two teams have split their season series with two wins apiece. Saginaw improves to 18-11-1-2 while Sarnia falls to 16-15-2-2.
