OHL This Week: Nov. 2 to 5, 2017
Another weekend of OHL action is upon us. Here’s a look at what’s going on around the league.
EIGHT OHL GAMES INCLUDED IN 2017-18 CHL ON SPORTSNET SCHEDULE:
The CHL on Sportsnet returns for the 2017-18 season on Monday when the puck drops at the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series. In addition to national event coverage, Sportsnet will broadcast weekly Saturday afternoon games from coast-to-coast. A total of eight OHL matchups are on the ‘Saturday Showcase’ schedule including the Kitchener Rangers at the Barrie Colts to start things off Saturday November 18 at 3:30 pm. Full schedule
OHL HOSTS 12TH ANNUAL CHL/NHL OFFICIATING DEVELOPMENT CAMP:
For the 12th straight year the Canadian Hockey League in partnership with the National Hockey League is facilitating the annual CHL/NHL Officiating Development Camp for current CHL officials. The seminar rotates annually across the CHL’s three leagues with the 2017 edition hosted by the Ontario Hockey League November 3-5. The weekend includes 16 current CHL officials (8 from OHL) and aims to support and enhance the development of current CHL officials in cooperation with the NHL through on-ice and off-ice activities. The OHL named Top Performers for the month of October on Tuesday including Player of the Month Jordan Kyrou (Sarnia Sting), Goaltender of the Month Justin Fazio (Sarnia Sting), Defenceman of the Month Sean Durzi (Owen Sound Attack) and Rookie of the Month Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie Colts). Read more

The OHL named top Academic Players for the month of October on Wednesday including the East Division’s Kevin Bahl (Ottawa 67’s), Central Division’s Blake McConville (Sudbury Wolves), Midwest Division’s Billy Moskal (London Knights) and West Division’s Brett Jacklin (Sault Ste. 23 OHL PLAYERS SET FOR WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE:
The 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge gets underway on Sunday in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, BC, with 23 OHL players competing on one of three Canadian teams. The eight-team tournament also features the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States. Pre-Tournament action gets underway on Thursday. STING AND GREYHOUNDS IN CHL TOP 10 RANKINGS:
The Sarnia Sting remained the top ranked team in the CHL this week behind a 13-game winning streak while the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds held steady at sixth overall. The Barrie Colts remained an honourable mention team for the third straight week. Full Rankings

SPITFIRES’ AARON LUCHUK NAMED OHL ‘ON THE RUN’ PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND CHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Aaron Luchuk of the Windsor Spitfires is both the OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week as well as the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 29 with nine points in three games including four goals and five assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-2. Luchuk recorded a pair of multi-point performances last week elevating him into a tie atop the OHL’s overall scoring race while taking over the league lead in goals and helping the Spitfires earn a pair of road victories. WAWANESA OHL PLAYS OF THE WEEK:
The 6th edition of the Wawanesa OHL Plays of the Week for the 2017-18 season feature another collection of the league’s Top-5 goals scored in the week ending October 29. This week highlights include individual efforts by Cam Hillis of the Guelph Storm and Barrett Hayton of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Great teamwork by the Niagara IceDogs leads to a Danial Singer goal, followed by great passes by Kevin Hancock to Owen Sound Attack linemate Nick Suzuki, and Allan McShane of the Oshawa Generals with some sauce on his feed to Renars Krastenbergs. LEVI SIAU COMMITS TO WOLVES:
The Sudbury Wolves have received a commitment from 2017 12th round selection Levi Siau. The Wolves chose the Thunder Bay native from the London Jr. Knights Minor Midgets. He has played 22 games with the French River Rapids of the NOJHL this season, where he has scored 12 goals and added 4 assists. Read more

OHL continues 10-year partnership with Special Olympics: The OHL, Law Enforcement Torch Run, and Special Olympics Ontario are teaming up during the month of November to help make a difference in the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability. Teams will help raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics at select home games throughout the month. The first games take place this weekend including Friday night in Kingston, Saturday in Hamilton, and Sunday in Oshawa and Ottawa.

Lemieux scores first NHL goal Sunday: Windsor Spitfires graduate Brendan Lemieux scored his first career NHL goal on Sunday, helping the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-1. The 21-year-old Lemieux played in his fourth game of the season after being called up from the AHL’s Manitoba Moose two weeks ago. A second round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Draft, Lemieux played four OHL seasons between Barrie and Windsor, recording 106 goals, 83 assists and 189 points over 209 career regular season games.
MacDermid, Mitchell, Tippett score first NHL goals on Thursday: A trio of OHL graduates scored their first career NHL goals last Thursday. Erie Otters graduate Kurtis MacDermid helped the Los Angeles Kings get past Montreal 5-1, scoring in his fifth career NHL contest. Mississauga Steelheads forward Owen Tippett scored his first career marker at just 18 years of age as the Florida Panthers beat up on the Anaheim Ducks 8-3. Guelph Storm grad Zack Mitchell scored his first career tally as the Minnesota Wild defeated the New York Islanders 6-4.
Thornton reaches 1,400 NHL points: Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds graduate Joe Thornton recorded his 1,400th career NHL point on Wednesday as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Nashville Predators 4-1. Thornton had an assist in the win, giving him 1,400 points over 1,458 career regular season NHL contests. A 38-year-old native of London, Ont., Thornton was the first overall pick of the 1997 NHL Draft after spending two seasons with the Greyhounds where he earned OHL Rookie of the Year honours and won gold with the Canadian World Junior Team. Over 125 career regular season OHL contests, Thornton recorded 71 goals, 127 assists and 198 points.
Doughty plays 700th NHL contest: Guelph Storm graduate Drew Doughty played in his 700th career NHL contest on Monday, logging over 29 minutes of ice as the Los Angeles Kings fell to the St. Louis Blues 4-2. The 27-year-old London, Ont. native has already put together an accomplished career and is of to a strong start in 2017-18, recording nine points (3-6–9) through his first 12 games. Doughty is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, 2016 Norris Trophy winner and two-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist. The OHL’s Defenceman of the Year in 2008, Doughty played three seasons with the Storm from 2005-08, winning World Junior gold in his final year. He was chosen by the Kings second overall in the 2008 NHL Draft.
NHL Player of the Month Stamkos, OHL grad Tavares set for 600th NHL game: A pair of former OHL stars will both reach the 600 game milestone this week. Stamkos’ Lightning host the New York Rangers on Thursday while Tavares’ New York Islanders visit Washington. Both former first overall NHL Draft selections, Stamkos and Tavares turned standout OHL careers into impressive NHL tenures as both players are franchise cornerstones of their respective clubs. As of Monday, Stamkos led the NHL in scoring with six goals, 18 assists and 24 points through just 13 games this season, earning NHL Player of the Month for October honours. Tavares has been red hot as well, recording at least three points in four of his past five contests to give him 15 points (11-4–15) in 12 games this season.
Amadio makes NHL debut: North Bay Battalion graduate Mike Amadio made his NHL debut with the Los Angeles Kings last Thursday. The 21-year-old Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. native makes the jump after spending last season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign where he registered 41 points (16-25–41) over 68 games. Los Angeles’ third round pick in 2014, Amadio played our OHL seasons between Brampton and North Bay, setting a Battalion franchise record with 50 goals during the 2015-16 season. He finished his OHL career with 92 goals, 134 assists and 226 points over 263 regular season games.
McKeown recalled by Hurricanes: Former Kingston Frontenacs captain Roland McKeown was recalled by the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday. The 21-year-old native of Listowel, Ont. is in his second pro season after recording a goal and 10 assists in 71 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers last season. McKeown has three points (1-2–3) in nine games with Charlotte this year. The right-hand shot defenceman played four seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs from 2012-16, recording 146 points (32-114–146) over 247 regular season contests. He was Los Angeles’ second round pick in 2014.
Mermis recalled by Coyotes: Mastercard Memorial Cup champion Dakota Mermis has been recalled by the Arizona Coyotes and is expected to make his NHL debut Thursday night against the Buffalo Sabres. The 23-year-old defenceman from Alton, IL, is in his third professional season and has three points through seven games with the AHL’s Tuscon Roadrunners. Mermis played three OHL seasons beginning with the London Knights in 2012-13 where he captured his first Robertson Cup title, then ending an Oshawa General helping them achieve CHL supremacy in 2015.
Strome named AHL Player of the Week: Erie Otters graduate Dylan Strome has been named the AHL Player of the Week after the Tucson Roadrunners centreman recorded seven points (1-6–7) and a plus-8 rating over three consecutive wins. The third overall pick of the 2015 NHL Draft, Strome has 10 points (1-9–10) over his first six AHL contests after leading the Erie Otters to an OHL Championship last spring. The MVP of the 2017 Mastercard Memorial Cup and Erie’s franchise scoring leader, Strome finished his time in the OHL with 114 goals, 240 assists and 354 career points over 219 regular season games.
AHL Player of the Month Mangiapane leads league in scoring: Barrie Colts graduate and two-time 100-point scorer Andrew Mangiapane is the American Hockey League’s Player of the Month for October. Mangiapane leads the league in scoring with 15 points (5-10–15) over his first nine contests. The Stockton Heat forward has points in all nine of his appearances this season after recording 41 (20-21–41) in 66 as a rookie last year. The 21-year-old Bolton, Ont. native was a sixth round pick by the Flames in 2015. He recorded 118 goals, 143 assists and 261 points over his 195-game OHL career.
Platzer named ECHL Player of the Month: Owen Sound Attack graduate Kyle Platzer of the Wichita Thunder has been named the ECHL Player of the Month for October. The 22-year-old scored five goals with six assists for 11 points in a perfect 6-0 stretch for the Thunder. A native of Waterloo, Ont., Platzer received ECHL Player of the Week honours last week and is tied for fourth in league scoring. The former fourth round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in 2013 played in 203 career OHL games between London and Owen Sound from 2011-15, recording 140 points (61-79–140) in the process.
Sparks makes Marlies franchise history: Guelph Storm graduate Garret Sparks became the new Toronto Marlies franchise leader in shutouts on Wednesday, recording his 11th in a Marlies uniform with an 18-save effort against the Laval Rocket. The Marlies took the game 3-0 as Sparks improved to 5-1-0 on the season with a 1.52 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage. The 24-year-old native of Elmhurst, Ill. played three seasons with the Guelph Storm from 2010-13, going 71-48-1-8 with a 2.97 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage and 12 shutouts.
Raddysh, DeBrincat share unique dynamic: TheAHL.com took the opportunity to document the close friendship between Erie Otters graduates Darren Raddysh and Alex DeBrincat this past week, shedding some light on the highly successful duo within the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Marchment forging his own path in AHL: Mississauga Steelheads graduate Mason Marchment has four goals through his first six games of the AHL season with the Toronto Marlies. Signed as an undrafted free agent, Marchment, who is the son of former long-time NHL defenceman Bryan Marchment, has come a long way in his development. Seven OHL grads to represent Canada at Karjala Cup: OHL graduates Jesse Blacker (Owen Sound Attack), Eric O’Dell (Sudbury Wolves), Derek Roy (Kitchener Rangers), Christian Thomas (Oshawa Generals), Wojtek Wolski (Brampton Battalion) and goaltender Justin Peters (Plymouth Whalers) have been chosen to represent Canada at the 2017 Karjala Cup from Nov. 8-12 in Helsinki, Finland and Biel, Switzerland. Team Canada will face Switzerland, Sweden and Finland as Canada’s National Men’s Team continues to evaluate national talent in the lead-up to the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Williams earns first pro shutout: Erie Otters franchise goaltending wins leader Devin Williams earned his first professional shutout on Saturday, making 45 saves to backstop the ECHL’s Tulsa Oilers to a 2-0 win over the Allen Americans. The 22-year-old native of Saginaw, Mich. is off to a 4-0-0-0 start to the season after spending last season at Acadia University where he went 8-4-0 with a 2.80 goals-against average and an .896 save percentage over 17 games. Williams played parts of five seasons with the Otters, going 106-47-4-4 with a 3.03 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage and nine shutouts over 175 career regular season games. He is one of just five OHL goaltenders to win over 100 career games, becoming the first American netminder to do so.
Johnson named Assistant Coach at UOIT: Oshawa Generals graduate Jamie Johnson has been named assistant coach of the UOIT Ridgebacks Men’s Hockey Team. A 35-year-old native of Port Franks, Ont., Johnson played four OHL seasons between Sarnia and Oshawa from 1999-2003 before a lengthy professional career between the ECHL, AHL and various European leagues. Johnson will coach under former Ottawa 67’s forward Curtis Hodgins at UOIT while fellow Generals teammate Paul Ranger serves as the club’s other assistant. UOIT is off to a 2-3-1 start to the season.

They’ve been featured here for a few weeks now, but who can take their eyes off a team on a 13-game winning streak?
The Sarnia Sting head out on the road this coming weekend, starting things off in Peterborough against the East Division-leading Petes on Thursday. OHL Player of the Month Jordan Kyrou leads a balanced scoring attack that has been getting contributions from up and down the lineup as Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka, Los Angeles Kings draftee Drake Rymsha and sophomore forward Brady Hinz have also been regular sights on scoresheets across the league.
The Petes come off an 8-3 rout of Hamilton on Sunday as they took wins in two out of their three contests last weekend. Veteran captain Logan DeNoble leads the Petes in scoring with 20 points (11-9–20) over 16 games while the speed of Florida Panthers prospect Jonathan Ang has helped him put together 18 points (7-11–18).
Can the Sting be stopped this weekend? They visit Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa.

The London Knights have showed some signs of life lately, but are they ready to tangle with Owen Sound?
The return of some key players to the lineup has seemed to jumpstart the London Knights in the past two weeks. Thought they suffered setback in Guelph on Sunday, the Knights have looked more in sync offensively as St. Louis Blues prospect Robert Thomas has led the way with 17 points (9-8–17) over 12 games. Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton has six points (1-5–6) in the five games since he returned from an extended look at the NHL level. Recently acquired goaltender Joseph Raaymakers has been a shot in the arm, going 4-1-0-0 over his five games in green and gold.
The Attack have had ups and downs of their own, but took a pair of wins last weekend before falling to the Windsor Spitfires at home on Sunday. The Attack have managed to climb into first place in the Midwest Division despite holding just an .868 team save percentage. The offence is potent as evidenced by the strong play of Vegas Golden Knights prospect Nick Suzuki (10-16–26), OHL Defenceman of the Month Sean Durzi (8-17–25) and playmaking veteran Kevin Hancock (6-14–20).
Saturday’s contest will be a good test for the Knights as they try and get back into the thick of things in the Midwest Division.
