OHL teams pay tribute on Remembrance Day
Teams across the Ontario Hockey League will honour the brave men and women who have served in the line of duty this weekend as Remembrance Day and Veterans Day weigh heavy on the hearts and minds of players, staff and fans across the league.
Several teams will don special commemorative Remembrance Day jerseys to raise proceeds for causes near and dear to the hearts of past and present members of our military.
The Kingston Frontenacs and Saginaw Spirit became the first OHL clubs to salute the troops last weekend, suiting up in camouflage threads for the cause.
After the Frontenacs supported the troops on Friday, the Spirit hosted Military Appreciation Night at the Dow Event Center on Sunday, scoring three goals in the third period to defeat the Barrie Colts 4-2. Game worn jerseys were auctioned off post-game with proceeds going toward Elks Lodge 88 in Bay City, Mich.
Tonight, five teams around the league will wear specially themed Remembrance Day jerseys.
The Sudbury Wolves will sport a green camouflage theme when they play host to the Erie Otters. The Wolves will host a pre-game Remembrance Day Game celebration beginning at 7:00pm with local Sudbury Legion members leading the ceremony. The game worn jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game with proceeds going to Wounded Warriors Canada through the Sudbury Professional Firefighters Association.
In Sault Ste. Marie, the Greyhounds will raise funds for the Veterans Program Branch 25 and Veterans Commemorative Monument Project. They’ll wear Remembrance Day jerseys with a hint of red camouflage to be auctioned off via blind auction following their Armed Forces Night game at home to the Saginaw Spirit.
The Guelph Storm host the Ottawa 67’s and will be auctioning off their game worn uniforms in an online auction that begins Monday. All proceeds will go to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 234 as they support veterans in need.
In St. Catharines, RCAF veterans will take part in a ceremonial puck drop to start the night before the Niagara IceDogs, decked out in military style jerseys, battle the division rival Barrie Colts. All jerseys worn by the IceDogs tonight will be auctioned off following the game with all proceeds being donated in support of the Lincoln Welland Regiment.
The Kitchener Rangers host the Owen Sound Attack at The Aud tonight, suiting up in uniquely themed Remembrance Day uniforms. Known for their long line of jerseys that have honoured our military, the Rangers will wear uniforms inspired by the Canadian women’s army corps.
Catch all of tonight’s action, including a number of unique Remembrance Day uniforms when action gets underway at 7:00pm on OHL Live.
