NHL Opening Night rosters feature OHL stars from across three decades
The 2024-25 NHL regular season is underway, and 188 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) graduates were included on Opening Night rosters—the highest number of alumni among the Canadian Hockey League’s (CHL) three member Leagues.
The season kicked off on Tuesday with three games, as the Utah Hockey Club headlined the schedule with a 5-2 win over Chicago in their inaugural matchup. Some notables included on this year’s season-opening rosters include 2006-born Guelph Storm forward Jett Luchanko, recently drafted in the first round by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2024 NHL Draft. Eastern Conference champion Calum Ritchie of the Oshawa Generals also looks to make his debut with the Colorado Avalanche after being selected in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the club.
All 20 current OHL teams, along with the former franchises in the Belleville Bulls and Plymouth Whalers, are represented by alumni on NHL rosters. The Chicago Blackhawks have the most OHL graduates with 10 players, followed by the San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals with nine each.
A total of seven OHL graduates enter the season as captain of their respective NHL team including Jordan Staal (Carolina/Peterborough), Gabriel Landeskog (Colorado/Kitchener), Boone Jenner (Columbus/Oshawa), Connor McDavid (Edmonton/Erie), Nick Suzuki (Montreal/Owen Sound/Guelph), Logan Couture (San Jose/Ottawa) and Nick Foligno (Chicago/Sudbury).
