Wolves acquire veteran blueliner DeAngelis in trade with Windsor
The Sudbury Wolves closed out the past week with a big splash late Friday afternoon, announcing the acquisition of 19-year-old defenceman Nicholas DeAngelis from the Windsor Spitfires.
The Wolves also received recently-signed Spitfires prospect Trevor O’Dell, a former seventh-round pick in 2022 who began his season with the OJHL’s Toronto Patriots. In exchange, Sudbury dealt 17-year-old blueliner Conor Walton, who spent much of the 2022-23 season with the Espanola Paper Kings of the NOJHL, to Windsor along with five draft picks – Niagara’s second-round in 2024, Guelph’s third-round in 2025, Sudbury’s sixth-round in 2025, Windsor’s second-round in 2026 and a conditional Sudbury 15th in 2025.
DeAngelis, who was a second-round pick by the Spitfires in 2020, joins the Wolves after recently attending training camp with the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. He recorded 26 points (2-24–26) in 67 games last season, and was part of Windsor’s Western Conference championship team in 2022. He appeared in the 2022-23 OHL Coaches Poll, being voted the Western Conference’s third-best defensive defenceman.
“We are thrilled to add Nicholas DeAngelis to our team today,” said Wolves GM Rob Papineau. “He has had a couple of outstanding seasons in Windsor and is coming off a great main training camp in Columbus. He is a strong veteran left shot D-man who has played in 28 playoff games in the past two seasons.”
The twin brother of Wolves forward Kieron Walton, Conor joins the Spitfires after originally being Sudbury’s fourth-round pick in 2022.
“Conor is a great young man and has a bright future in this game,” said Papineau. “We wanted to acquire an older veteran defenceman with strong regular season and playoff experience and to do so you need to be willing to sacrifice part of your future to do so. This is a great opportunity for Conor, and we wish him all the best in Windsor.”
“He is a kid we liked in his draft year, he is a big body and a strong defender.” Spitfires GM Bill Bowler said of the addition of Walton. “He will get every opportunity to play in our league and we welcome him to the Spitfires.”
DeAngelis has yet to make his season debut, but may have the opportunity to do so on Sunday afternoon when the Wolves play host to the North Bay Battalion at 2:05pm. Walton was in the lineup for Windsor on Saturday, wearing #28 as they fell to the Guelph Storm by a score of 4-2.
