Monday Highlights: Cardwell’s late pair carry Spirit to victory

Ethan Cardwell (10, 11) broke a 1-1 tie with 2:07 remaining in the third period as the Saginaw Spirit finally broke through after peppering Soo Greyhounds goaltender Bailey Brkin throughout the night. Cam Baber drew an assist on the game winner before Cardwell hit the empty net to seal the deal, improving Saginaw to a West Division-leading 21-10-2-2. Draft eligible forward Cole Perfetti (20) got things started for the Spirit 6:19 into action before Soo defenceman Robert Calisti (11) answered just over a minute later. The score would remain tied at one until the late stages when Cardwell scored the difference-maker. Saginaw outshot Sault Ste. Marie 40-25, earning their sixth straight win as local product Dalton Duhart picked up a pair of helpers. The Spirit have won three of four against the Greyhounds this season as Sault Ste. Marie falls to 18-17-2-0. Brkin turned aside 37 of 39 shots in the loss while Saginaw’s Marshall Frappier picked up the win with a 24-save effort.
