Wolves Fall to Spirit
The Sudbury Wolves welcomed the Saginaw Spirit for the only time this season for Bell Let’s Talk night Friday. The Spirit got the best of the Wolves as they soundly won with a 6-3 final.
Both teams had a number of quality chances during the first period, starting with the Wolves. The line of DAVID LEVIN, RYAN VALENTINI, and DMITRY SOKOLOV was on fire again, as LEVIN opened the scoring early in the period. LEVIN‘s goal was his third goal in two games. The Spirit gained momentum as the period continued, notching two goals that off the sticks of HAYDEN HODGSON and FILIP HRONEK.
A minute and a half into the second period, the Wolves scored to tie the game at two. The goal was scored by ALAN LYSZCZARCZYK who beat EVAN CORMIER to tie the game. KYLE CAPOBIANCO picked up his second assist of the game on the play. Two minutes later, COLE COSKEY scored for the Spirit allowing them to regain the lead. The goal was reviewed by the referees and deemed a good goal.
Five minutes into the third period, HODGSON scored his second of the game to extend the Spirits lead to 4-2. The Wolves managed some solid pressure in the last 10 minutes of the game, killing off a 5 on 3. In the final minutes, Sudbury boy, DAMIEN GIROUX scored a shorthanded goal to extend the Spirit’s lead. This was GIROUX’s first time playing in front of a home crowd since being drafted to the Spirit last year. He was also given third star honours for his performance. OWEN LANE scored in the final two minutes, but it was not enough for a comeback. The Wolves fell by a 6-3 final, with shots on goal 30-23 in favour of the Spirit.
The Sudbury Wolves are back in action next Friday at home as the Peterborough Petes make their way to the Sudbury Community Arena on Friday, January 27th. Game time is 7:00pm.
