SmartStop Post Game Recap – Brampton Forces Overtime in a 2-1 Loss
BRAMPTON, ON – The Steelheads took on the Sarnia Sting on their second annual Women in Sports presented by Cullingan. This matchup also marked Carter Hicks’ 100th career game in the OHL.
This special occasion welcomed Julia Tocheri, Meghan Chayka, Hayley McGoldrick, Gabi Best, Rachel Yerxa, Jacqueline Doorey and Sarah Orban to a panel discussing their journeys within the industry with young, up-and-coming women in sports.
Sarnia took control of the first few minutes, mustering seven shots on net before Brampton could get their first. The Steelheads struggled with zone exits and remained hemmed in their own end as the Sting continued their pressure early on. Starting goalie Zach Bowen kept the Steelheads in the game and looked sharp in his second straight start within 24 hours.
The game leveled out as the Steelheads got their legs going, producing some quality chances from Nathan Amidovski and Reed Gee in front of the opposition’s net.
Both teams escaped the first period scoreless.
During the intermission, the Toronto Sceptres’ very own Clara Van Wieren and Canadian Olympian Sarah Orban joined us on the outer concourse of the CAA Centre, signing autographs and giving fans a chance to meet and take pictures.
The second period kicked off with sustained pressure from the Steelheads, forcing the Sting to ice the puck two consecutive times. This resulted in a powerplay being dealt to Sarnia at 16:20, sending Brampton to their first man-advantage of the afternoon.
Sarnia’s Logan Hawery finally broke the ice at 13:07, scoring his fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0 for the Sting.
At 11:22, Steelhead’s defender Carter Hicks scored, sending the crowd into an uproar with the score now 1-1. With momentum now on the home team’s side, Brampton continued their push with Bowen making some key saves in the process.
Their powerplay squad headed back to work with just under seven minutes left on a roughing call but could not solve the Sting’s goalie. The Steelheads stuck to their game plan playing a systematic game for the rest of the period, producing a handful of dangerous chances coming off the stick of Nathan Amidovski most noticeably forcing an overtime.
After a back-and-forth affair in extra time, it would be Jordan Bax to score the game winner. Brampton lost this one 2-1 but managed to pick up a crucial point in the standings.
Join us next for our Family Day Game on Monday, February 16, when the Brampton Steelheads take on the North Bay Battalion at the CAA Centre.
