Jordan Maletta’s second OHL goal was a big one.
After jumping off the bench on a change, the rookie forward finished off a nifty, three-way passing play with Michael Clarke and Ben Johnson at 18:27 of the second period for the game winner, as the Spits held off the Soo Greyhounds in a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at the WFCU Centre.
Brady Vail (15) and Kerby Rychel (26) had the other goals for Windsor (21-22-3-1), which moved within four points of Owen Sound for fifth place in the Western Conference.
Jaroslav Pavelka was outstanding in goal, turning aside 32 shots for the win.
Gianluca Curcuruto (3) and Joe Rogalski (5) were the only two Greyhounds (19-24-2-2) to beat Pavelka on the day.
Jack Campbell made 23 saves in goal for Sault Ste Marie, which lost its 12th straight road game.
It took the home side 11 minutes to register its first shot. But once the Spits got it going in the first period, they made good on a pair occassions.
Vail made it 1-0, taking a brilliant feed from Rychel at 13:02. Rychel followed with one of his own, picking up a loose puck and beating Jack Campbell to make it 2-0 at 18:15.
The Hounds tied things back up with a pair of goals in a span of 1:11 in the second period.
Maletta’s winner was a thing of beauty. Clarke took a pinpoint pass from Johnson at the left faceoff dot, before waiting for a streaking Maletta to get to the front of the net.
The Spitifires finish the weekend with four out of a possible six points.
Next up is a home date with the Saginaw Spirit on Thursday at the WFCU Centre.
