Kerby Rychel scored in the fourth round, giving the Spitfires a 3-2 shootout win over the Sting in front of 3,120 at the RBC Centre in Sarnia on Sunday afternoon.
Rychel (16) and Josh Ho-Sang (15) scored in regulation for Windsor (17-10-0-0), which swept a weekend home-and-home series with the Sting.
Ho-Sang’s goal came on Windsor’s 51st of 58 shots, tying the game with just 5:29 to play in regulation.
Taylor Dupuis (56 saves) was oustanding in goal for Sarnia, as the Spits outshot the Sting 24-5 through 20 minutes and 39-12 after two periods.
BATTLE BACK
Jake McDowell (4) gave Sarnia (9-17-0-2) a 1-0 lead at 5:36 of the second period, an advantage the Spits quickly snuffed out with Rychel’s goal at 10:42.
Zachary Core’s first OHL goal restored the Sting’s lead at 6:22 of the third.
But Ho-Sang was dazzling on the tying goal shift, just missing on a deft between the legs move before regaining the puck, swooping around the net and beating Dupuis to square the affair.
TINO SOLID AGAIN
Alex Fotinos had to be solid in goal, going long stretches of time with few or no shots. And the 18-year-old goalkeeper was just that, making 24 stops, many at key times, in the win.
The Spitfires 58 was a season-high in shots.
The previous high, 49, was recorded back on September 26th against the Sting, in a 3-1 loss at the WFCU Centre.
