A new question goes up every Tuesday morning at 9:00am ET on the Rangers Recall website.
WEEK 3:
Q. Name that Ranger: He was the only player in Rangers’ history to record two 50-plus goal seasons.
A. Jeff Larmer is the only player in franchise history to twice reach the 50-goal plateau with the Rangers. He collected the Don Cameron Trophy at the end of the 1980-81 season after recording 54 goals (and a total of 100 points) during the regular season. The following year Larmer scored 51 times, despite appearing in just 49 games. Later that season he was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star team as the Rangers were crowned CHL champions for the first time in franchise history.
Kitchener has hosted many prolific scorers over the past 49 seasons. The Rangers’ first captain, Sandy Fitzpatrick, was also the first skater to score 50 goals, notching 51 in 1964-65.
The Don Cameron Trophy (given to 50 goal scorers) has been awarded 11 times to 10 different Rangers since 1975-76. Don ‘Red’ Laurence was the first to collect the award, recognizing his offensive output that season. Paul Reinhardt earned the Don Cameron Trophy as a defenceman, tallying 51 in 1978-79.
Dwight Foster’s name also appears on the trophy: the Rangers’ all time leader in goals scored (158) and total points (382 in 262 career games) recorded 60 goals in 1976-77. Wayne Presley holds the record for most goals in a single season, with 63, a benchmark he set in 1983-84.
In 2010, Jeff Skinner became the youngest player in franchise history to score 50 goals, potting the game winner late in the third period of a home contest against the Owen Sound Attack.
