It’s a small (hockey) world after all

Now we know what happens to college hockey champions.

As we were grabbing snacks at Tim Horton’s in Peterborough yesterday, Steve Spott was approached in the parking lot. He spent several minutes chatting with a man and his two young children. At one point, it was easy to read Spotter’s lips when he asked “are you going to the game tonight?” The coach then fixed the family up with some tickets to the Petes game.

Turns out, it was the man who backstopped the Seneca (College) Sting to an OCAA hockey championship in 1994. Steve Spott coached that team before moving onto the Markham Waxers. We often talk about the bond shared by teams that win championships. This is yet another example of its existence. In this case, it has even outlasted men’s college hockey, which no longer exists in Ontario. Nearly 20 years later, the coach and his former goalie had a happy reunion in, of all places, a Tim Horton’s parking lot.

Come to think of it, that’s about as Canadian as it gets.
