HOUNDS SHUT OUT RANGERS
The Kitchener Rangers fell 3-0 to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Sunday afternoon. The meeting was the final game of the regular season for the Rangers, who will open their playoff series with the London Knights on Friday, March 27.
The teams skated through a scoreless first period; Rangers starter Dawson Carty stopped all 12 shots he faced, and Brandon Halverson made five saves for the Greyhounds.
Sault Ste Marie broke the deadlock early in the second period, scoring 79 seconds into the frame. Anthony DeAngelo’s hard shot bounced off the goal post, but Gabe Guertler picked up the rebound and snapped a quick shot past Carty for his 27th of the season. Nick Ritchie picked up the second assist on the play.
Michael Bunting added to the Greyhounds lead with less than eight minutes to play in the middle frame. Carty stopped Jared McCann, but the sophomore winger charged to the crease and lifted a rebound shot over the goalie’s left pad for his 37th of the season.
Sault Ste. Marie led shots on goal 14-6 in the second period.
Ritchie pushed the Greyhounds ahead 3-0 early in the third, firing a wrist shot past Carty to collect his 29th of the season. Captain Darnell Nurse and Blake Speers earned the helpers on the play at 1:39.
The Greyhounds out-shot the Rangers 11-7 in the final period, and finished with a 37-18 overall advantage.
The Rangers will face off against the London Knights in the opening round of the 2015 Ontario Hockey League Playoffs. Game one is Friday at 7:30pm at the Budwesier Gardens in London.
