Bergkvist named to OHL Three Stars

1ST STAR: RYAN SUZUKI (SAGINAW SPIRIT) – 3G, 1A
Saginaw Spirit centreman and Carolina Hurricanes first rounder Ryan Suzuki’s four-point performance came in a 5-2 win over the Soo Greyhounds and included his first career OHL hat-trick. The 18-year-old product of London, Ont. scored midway through the opening frame to tie things up at 1-1, and then twice in the game’s remaining five minutes to make it 4-2. He also picked up an assist on highly ranked NHL Draft prospect Cole Perfetti’s only goal of the night and 24th on the year. Through 24 games, Suzuki boasts eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points, and seven of those points have come since joining the Spirit just last week (3-4-7). The first overall pick of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection, Suzuki went on to be selected 28th overall by the Hurricanes at last year’s NHL Draft. His brother, Nick Suzuki, spent four seasons in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack and Guelph Storm. Drafted 13th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Nick currently plays for the Montreal Canadiens.

2ND STAR: AXEL BERGQVIST (KITCHENER RANGERS) – 1G, 2A
Kitchener Rangers rookie and Arizona Coyotes prospect Axel Bergqvist put up a goal and two assists in his team’s 9-2 blowout of the North Bay Battalion on Friday night. The 19-year-old defenceman from Insjön, Swe. picked up assists on goals from OHL veteran Liam Hawel and Rangers rookie Declan McDonnell in the first and second periods before finding the back of the net within the game’s remaining nine minutes to lift his team up 9-1. Bergqvist has four goals and 30 assists for 34 points through his first 42 games in the league. He was a second round pick of the Rangers at last year’s CHL Import Draft and was picked up in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Coyotes. He spent the 2018-2019 season with Leksand’s IF J20 SuperElit team and totaled 12 goals and 21 points in 23 regular season games. He also totaled 10 points (3-7-10) in 36 games with Leksands IF.

3RD STAR: MAXIM GOLOD (ERIE OTTERS) – 3A
Forward Maxim Golod helped the Erie Otters to their third straight win with three assists in Friday’s 4-3 edging of the Sarnia Sting. All three helpers came in the first period to help lift the Otters up 3-1. The 19-year-old native of Concord, Ont. leads all Erie skaters with 54 points (17-37-54) through 41 games in his third season with the squad. He was picked up by the Otters in the 13th round of the 2016 OHL Priority Selection. Golod attended training camp with the Philadelphia Flyers in September.
