Petes double up Rangers in exhibition action in Buffalo
Jonathan Ang and Adam Timleck each potted a pair of goals and an assist as the Peterborough Petes skated to a 6-3 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Day Two of the OHL Pre-Season Showcase at HarborCenter in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday.
It was the Rangers who took a 1-0, first period lead but the Petes answered back with four consecutive goals and never looked back. Special teams was also a key to victory for the Petes, who scored twice with the man advantage and once shorthanded.
Riley Damiani’s goal at the 12:58 mark of the opening period was also a power play marker, giving Kitchener the 1-0 lead with assists to Eric Guest and Joseph Garreffa.
Before the period was out the game was tied 1-1, as Zach Gallant from Chad Denault at 17:29 sent the game to the first intermission.
Timleck’s first of the game trickled past the goal line to give the Petes the lead, coming by way of the power play from Declan Chisholm and Pavel Gogolev at 9:12 of the second.
Ang, from Timleck, at 17:42 put the Petes up 3-1 to round out second period scoring.
Christopher Paquette extended the Peterborough lead to 4-1 with a power play goal which proved to be the eventual game winner. Ang and Cameron Supryka picked up the assists on the goal at 6:20 of the third period.
Just after the following faceoff the Rangers would respond with a goal by Jonathan Yantsis, assisted by Rickard Hugg and Connor Hall, to cut the Peterborough lead to 4-2 just 22 seconds later at 6:42.
Timleck’s second of the game gave the Petes insurance, 5-2, with an unassisted marker at 9:17.
Down three goals just past the midway point of the period, the Rangers persisted and once again brought themselves to within two as Liam Peyton pounced on a rebound in front of the Petes goal to make it a 5-3 game, from Kyle Gentles and Giovanni Vallati, at 12:33.
With time on the clock the Rangers pressed to close the gap, but it was Ang with his second of the game with 1:40 to play who sealed the 6-3 win for the Petes, shorthanded and unassisted.
Dylan Wells earned the win in goal for Peterborough, allowing three goals on 28 shots. Lucas Pfeil took the loss in net for Kitchener, surrendering six goals on 22 shots.
Kitchener outshot Peterborough 12-6 in the first period of play. Shots were 7-7 in the second, and 9-9 in the third for a game total of 28-22, Rangers.
The Petes finished 2-for-5 on the power play with a shorthanded goal, while the Rangers were 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Connor Hall, Joseph Garreffa and Dylan Seitz each wore an “A” and skated as alternate captains.
The Rangers round out weekend action at the HarborCenter tomorrow night, Sunday, September 3rd when they take on the Erie Otters at 7:30pm.
The Rangers lone home exhibition game at The Aud takes place on Saturday, September 16th at 2pm. Prior to the game the team will host its annual Fan Fest and Barbecue supporting Children’s Wish at 11am. More details can be found here.
