Kitchener Rangers name Rickard Hugg team captain
The Kitchener Rangers have named forward Rickard Hugg the club’s 2018-19 team captain.
The 20-year-old, forward from Hudiksvall, Sweden was selected by the Rangers in the 2nd round, 60th overall in the 2017 CHL Import Draft.
Hugg has tallied 24 goals and 80 points in 106 career regular season games played. This season alone, Hugg has registered 18 goals and 30 assists for a total of 48 points in 40 games played.
Rickard was part of the leadership group for Team Sweden as an assistant captain at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships in BC this year. In 2017, Rickard captained Team Sweden to a silver medal at the IIHF World U-18 Championship.
“It is a huge honour to be named captain of the Kitchener Rangers,” said Rickard. “I am super happy and excited for the opportunity. It is nice to know the coaches think so highly of me.”
Hugg was previously acknowledged as the recipient of the Blueline Club Award as Most Gentlemanly Player at the Rangers 2017-18 Awards Ceremony. The award is presented to the player who best embodies sportsmanship and respect for the game in true Rangers fashion.
“We are happy to announce, Rickard will head up our leadership group for the remainder of the season. He possesses everything we feel a Ranger should be,” said general manager, Mike McKenzie. “His compete level is consistent in games, practices and workouts no matter what the day or situation. He is a first-class teammate and always shows respect to everyone on and off the ice.
“He has an extremely positive attitude and goes about his business every day with no complaints. Most importantly, he provides a model for our younger players to look up to and understand that this is the standard to strive for as they get older and continue their development.”
Riley Damiani, Greg Meireles, Joseph Garreffa and Cole Cameron will also be part of the leadership group as the team’s rotating alternate captains.
