Rangers’ Hamara & Mešár set to compete in 2023 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship
Kitchener, Ont. – Tomáš Hamara (pronounced toe-mosh, hom-uh-ruh) and Filip Mešár (pronounced fill-up, muh-shaar) are two Kitchener Rangers that are set to compete in the 2023 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Hockey Championship. The tournament runs from Monday, Dec. 26 through Thursday, Jan. 5 in Halifax, N.S. and Moncton, N.B.

Hamara returns to represent Czechia for the second consecutive tournament. A native of Prague, Hamara was selected by Kitchener in the first round (26th overall) in the 2022 CHL Import Draft on Jul. 1 before being tabbed by the NHL’s Ottawa Senators in the third round (87th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft on Jul 8. Hamara signed a three-year NHL Entry Level Contract with the Senators on Jul. 15 and committed to the Rangers on Aug. 29. A six-foot, 192-pound, left-shot defenceman, Hamara has recorded 11 points (2G, 9A0 in 24 games with Kitchener this season.
Mešár, returns to represent Slovakia for the third consecutive tournament. A native of Spisska Bela, Mešár was selected by Kitchener in the first round (9th overall) in the 2021 CHL Import Draft. He was then picked in the first round (26th overall) by the Montréal Canadiens in the 2022 NHL Draft on Jul. 7. He signed a three-year NHL entry-level contract with Montréal on Jul. 14 and was assigned to Kitchener by the Canadiens on Oct. 15. A 5-foot-10, 168-pound right-shot forward, Mešár has recorded 22 points (10G, 22A) in 17 games with Kitchener this season.

Hamara and Czechia will face-off against Canada Monday night at 6:30 p.m. (ET) on TSN 1, 4 & 5. Mešár and Slovakia will face Finland Tuesday at 11 a.m. (ET) on TSN 1, 4 & 5.

The IIHF World Junior Championship is an annual event for national under-20 ice hockey teams from around the world. The tournament usually attracts the top hockey players in this age category. The main tournament features the top ten ranked hockey nations in the world.
