FINAL: Rangers 5, Spitfires 6
The Kitchener Rangers headed down the 401 to Windsor for game one of the second round. The Rangers looked to carry over the momentum from their series win against The London Knights, thanks to Mike Petizian scoring the game-winning goal in overtime during game seven.
Mitchell Martin took an early tripping penalty only a minute into the game. The Rangers penalty kill started off hot, killing the penalty off and not allowing Windsor to generate quality scoring chances. After a handful of back-and-forth play, Joseph Serpa earned the first goal of the series by making a nice play around Windsor’s Mathias Onuska to make it 1-0. Pavel Cajan picked up where he left off from the 1st round, making multiple saves to keep the team in the lead.
Windsor came out in the 2nd period with more jump, which ultimately lead to Wyatt Johnston tying the game. This swung the momentum in Windsor’s way, as they added two more goals within two minutes, grabbing the 3-1 lead. Joseph Serpa snapped his second goal of the game past Onuska to get the Rangers back within one, making it 3-2.
Early in the 3rd period, Windsor took a hooking penalty, sending the Rangers to the powerplay. Mitchell Martin tapped a rebound in to tie the game 3-3. Just after, Windsor responded to regain the lead and go up 4-3. After some close chances for the Rangers, Windsor capitalized on one, extending their lead to 5-3. Mitchell Martin scored his second goal of the game to make it 5-4. Less than a minute later, Windsor snuck a goal past Cajan, which put them up 6-4. Mike Petizian would add a goal late to make it 6-5. Despite the late push, Windsor took game one by a final score of 6-5.
