Petes Partner with Local Organizations for Project Shutout Hunger
The Peterborough Petes are excited to partner with Coach4Food, the Kawartha Food Share, Boston Pizza, the Peterborough Minor Hockey Council (PMHC), and local grocery stores to launch the inaugural Project Shutout Hunger program that will take place in Peterborough between November 1 and 31, 2014.
All PMHC teams will compete against each other to collect and donate the most amount of food to the Kawartha Food Share. At the end of the month, the team with the highest donation total will be announced the winner, and will be recognized before the Petes game against Erie on Thursday January 29, 2014.
“Project Shutout Hunger is an important initiative spearheaded by the Ontario Hockey League. The Petes are committed to promoting physical health and nutrition in the Peterborough community, and organizations like the Kawartha Food Share play an integral role in ensuring that no-one will go hungry this holiday season,” added Matt D’Agostini, Petes Community Events Coordinator.
“We feel as an organization that it is important for our players to give back to the community in which they play,” noted Donna Johnston of the PMHC. “We look forward to helping enhance local awareness and increase food donations at this very special time of year when families in need can benefit most.”
The Kawartha Food Share feeds over 7,700 people a month and provides nutritious snacks to 47 area school breakfast programs that feed 17, 000 children daily.
Kawartha Food Share General Manager Steve Sullivan added that “[we] are so excited to be a part of the Coach4Food Program! It is important to raise awareness that poverty does in fact exist in Peterborough.”
Throughout the month of November, specific grocery stores across Peterborough will have set up Project Shutout Hunger donation bins. There will also be food collections taking place in the North Lobby prior to the Jan 29th game. All fans are encouraged to bring any non-perishable items to the game, which will be donated directly to the Kawartha Food Share.
“The Coach4Food Program is honored to be partnered with an organization so highly regarded as the Peterborough Petes. Together, I believe we can go a long way toward Shutting Out Hunger in Peterborough,” said Tom Hedican, Coach4Food Founder.
Additionally, Boston Pizza will donate five cents for every pound of food donated through this program, up to a maximum of $500.
“Boston Pizza Peterborough is pleased to have the opportunity to sponsor the Petes’ food drive efforts for Kawartha Food Share through the Coach4Food program,” noted Allen Cowitz, Boston Pizza Peterborough Community Relations Coordinator. “We are always proud to support local fundraising efforts and this is a great initiative to be a part of.”
