Petes Add Two Staff Members to Business Operations Team
The Peterborough Petes are excited to welcome Justine Martin and Tamara Burns to the business operations staff this January. Both women are completing internships for post-secondary credit and will serve four-month terms with the hockey club.
A Sudbury native and Conestoga College Bachelor of Public Relations student, Martin joins the Petes as Communications & Digital Media Intern. Justine has previously completed internships with Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! as a National Assistant Event Manager, and Mortgage Alliance Canada as Public Relations Coordinator. Martin has gained additional experience volunteering with Hockey With Heart, the London Knights, Special Olympics Kitchener-Waterloo, and Free The Children’s We Day.
“Working in hockey is something I’ve been striving towards for many years,” said Justine. “Having the opportunity to work not only within my favourite sport, but also for the OHL’s oldest team, is an honour.”
Burns, a resident of Millbrook, is joining the Petes as Marketing & Game Night Operations Intern following a three-month stint in which she volunteered as Game Night Lead. A graduate of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Bachelor of Commerce Marketing program, she is currently pursuing a Post-Graduate Sports and Entertainment Sales and Marketing Certificate from Loyalist College. Burns has previously completed a marketing internship with Global Spectrum at the General Motors Center. She has also gained work experience at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships and the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
“I am thrilled to be able to practice the skills I’ve developed with the organization I grew up with and idolize,” said Burns. “The Petes hold a special place in my heart. Being a part of their business team is a dream come true. I look forward to continuing to interact with fans and supporters throughout the remainder of the season.”
Both Martin and Burns will report to Aaron Garfat, Director of Sales, Marketing & Advertising; and Burton Lee, Director of Communications & Game Night Operations.
“After considering the candidacy of many qualified applicants, we’re thrilled to welcome Justine and Tamara to the business operations staff,” said Lee. “They are both driven, enthusiastic leaders that will work hard to positively impact all areas of the Petes organization.”

Tamara started interning with the Peterborough Petes in October 2013 as Game Night Lead. She is currently working toward a Post-Graduate Sports and Entertainment Sales and Marketing Certificate from Loyalist College. As part of her Post-Graduate Program, Tamara will take on Sales and Marketing responsibilities in the new year. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce Marketing Degree from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Tamara previously worked as a Marketing Intern at the General Motors Centre.
Justine joined the Petes organization as an intern in January 2014. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public relations at Conestoga College. Justine has previously completed internships with Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! as a National Assistant Event Manager and Mortgage Alliance Canada as a PR Coordinator. A Sudbury native, Justine currently plays defence with the Waterloo Raven’s Senior A women’s hockey club.
