Erie, Pennsylvania – A playoff-implications weekend lies ahead for the Erie Otters, taking on the teams sandwiching them in the Western Conference standings. Friday night sees Erie travel for one last time to Kitchener, looking to sweep the road series with the Rangers at The Aud. The Otters are currently tied with the Kitchener Rangers with 50 points and the same number of games played, but because of the tiebreaker the Otters hold the final spot in the West.
Holding steady onto the sixth-place spot in the Western Conference is the Owen Sound Attack, who are nine points ahead but have played three more games than both Erie and Kitchener. Erie makes its first (and last) trip to Owen Sound on Saturday and Sunday, looking for the sweep of the season series.
LAST TIME OUT
With a pair of games at home, and a Monday night on the road, the Erie Otters got three out of a possible six points earlier this week. The Otters started the weekend strong beating the Windsor Spitfires 6-4 at home, but the Spits battled back the next night, beating the Otters 5-4 in overtime.
Monday night saw the Otters take their last trip of the season to the Storm City, battling hard in a back-and-forth game with Guelph, but dropping 4-3 in regulation.
WHAT TO WATCH
Erie is a combined 4-0 against their two opponents this weekend, sweeping Kitchener on the road January 7 & 8, and sweeping Owen Sound at home on February 9 & 10.
The previous series in Kitchener, Nolan Lalonde put on one of the best series of his career enroute to Goaltender of the Week honors – including a 40/41 save night on the Saturday sweep. Elias Cohen had four points (2G+2A) on the weekend as well. The puck drops one last time at The Aud between these two this season at 7:30 P.M.
Owen Sound made the trip to Erie as the first Canadian opponent in the EIA since December 12. With a slightly-shortened bench for the road team, the Otters sent the Attack home to the tune of 7-4 and 5-3 finals. Owen Sound is a hot team of late, creating solid separation from the bottom two playoff teams. The two teams play on Saturday (7:30 P.M.) and Sunday (2 P.M.).
