Otters start second half with OT win
In their first game of the second half of the 2015-16 season, the Otters won a hard-fought overtime battle 2-1 over the Guelph Storm Tuesday night.
The first period saw a few good scoring opportunities for the Otters, including two power play chances. Storm goaltender Michael Giugovaz was able to keep the puck out of the net, and his counterpart in goal, Devin Williams, did the same. After twenty minutes, the game remained scoreless.
It took just 19 seconds for Erie to take the initial advantage in the second period. Jake Marchment scored his 12th of the season with assists from Vanya Lodnia and TJ Fergus on the man advantage. Guelph didn’t take long to respond, as James McEwan netted his 12th of the season less than a minute later to tie the game at one apiece. After those two goals were scored less than a minute into the period, the rest of the frame would see scoreless action as the teams headed to the locker room at the second intermission tied 1-1.
Similar to the first period and most of the second period, the third period featured stout defensive hockey from both squads that produce a stalemate, leading to an overtime period. The Otters had a power play carry over from the end of the final frame and they were able to make it count on the four-on-three in the extra period. Kyle Maksimovich ended the game with his 15th on the campaign, giving the Otters the 2-1 overtime win.
Erie will play it’s first home game in ten days on New Year’s Eve, December 31, against the Ottawa 67’s beginning at 7 p.m.
