HONOURARY CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED FOR SUBWAY® SUPER SERIES GAMES IN LONDON AND SUDBURY
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Ontario Hockey League and the London Knights and Sudbury Wolves Hockey Clubs today announced the Honourary Captains that will participate in the pregame ceremonies for the 2010 SUBWAY® Super Series games in London, ON, Thursday November 11, and in Sudbury, ON, Monday November 15.
World War II Veteran Mr. George Fortnum and hockey legend Vladislav Tretiak will serve as Honourary Captains for the game in London, with broadcasters Joe Bowen and Rob Faulds participating in Sudbury.
“The London Knights Hockey Club is very pleased to welcome George Fortnum and Vladislav Tretiak to the John Labatt Centre,” said Knights General Manager Mark Hunter. “We are pleased to be able to honour both of these distinguished gentlemen as Honoured Guests on Remembrance Day when Team OHL takes on Team Russia in the SUBWAY® Super Series.”

We are extremely proud to honour Joe and Rob on November 15th by raising a banner to the rafters of the Sudbury Arena.”
Mr. George Fortnum was born on September 20, 1920 in London, Ontario. Working as a butcher before the war, he enlisted in the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers in June, 1940. He served as a driver and Engineer during the Dieppe Raid, before being taken prisoner and held a POW shackled on the orders of Hitler until the end of the war in 1945. When Mr. Fortnum returned to London, he worked with the Watering Conditioning Farms before retiring in 1985.
Tretiak, a native of Moscow, Russia, had an outstanding hockey career in goal for the Soviet Union with a remarkable goals-against-average of 1.78 in 98 international games. He captured three Olympic gold medals in 1972, 1976, and 1984 along with 10 World Championship titles. He is best known for backstopping the Soviets as a 20-year-old in the 1972 Summit Series. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989, he currently serves as President of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.
Joe Bowen and Rob Faulds have each served as the “Voice of the Wolves” in Sudbury. Bowen worked for his hometown team from 1973-80 before Faulds, a Hamilton native, called the play-by-play from 1980-84. Bowen began his career in broadcasting in 1973 with CKSO Radio and TV in Sudbury and has since called over 2,000 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs with his famous catchphrase “Holy Mackinaw.” He was inducted into the Sudbury Kinsmen Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
Faulds has been in the media business for over 25 years and has worked three Olympic Games including Vancouver 2010. He can be seen and heard on Rogers Sportsnet CHL broadcasts across Canada and at all special events including the entire 2010 SUBWAY® Super Series where he will work alongside analyst Sam Cosentino and host Louis Jean.
The 2010 SUBWAY® Super Series will take place November 8 – 18 and marks the eighth straight year that teams of CHL All-Stars have competed against Team Russia in preparation for the World Junior Hockey Championships. The SUBWAY® Super Series is an integral part of the evaluation process prior to Team Canada’s final selection camp in December. This season, Canada will be competing for their 13th straight medal at the 2011 tournament in Buffalo, NY.
The 2010 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, Bank of Montreal and CCM. All games will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with the two QMJHL games shown on RDS.
