IceDogs Extinguish Firebirds, 5-1
The Niagara IceDogs got a well-earned win Thursday night as they defeated the Flint Firebirds by a score of 5-1.
The IceDogs came out flying, looking for their third straight win in their hunt to claim third place in the Eastern Conference. Blake Siebenaler got the Dogs off to a great start when he put a wrist shot on net from the point that fooled former IceDogs’ goaltender Brent Moran. Jordan Maletta would continue the Dogs’ strong start by banging home a rebound on the power play to put the Dogs up 2-0 after the first. Shots on goal favoured Flint, 12-11, in the period.
The second period saw the Dogs keep up their strong play and generate multiple chances. Flint would score the lone goal of the period however, to make the game 2-1 before entering the third. The Dogs would lead the period in shots by a count of 13-8.
The Dogs came out for the third and clearly didn’t want it to be a close contest as they scored three unanswered goals against the Firebirds. Aaron Haydon scored on a slap shot from the point and then Kyle Langdon tapped in a loose puck to score his second of the season in his first game back since February 14th. Graham Knott potted the fifth goal to put the dagger in the Firebirds when he picked the top corner just as a Dogs’ power play was expiring. The IceDogs also dominated the shot clock in the final frame by a tally of 14-5.
The IceDogs will be back at home on Saturday to host the North Bay Battalion in a huge matchup as the Dogs and Battalion both fight for third in the conference and sit only three points apart. Be sure to come out and watch as tickets are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs’ ticketing locations.
