Wolves Top Dogs in OT
SUDBURY, ON – The IceDogs travelled to Sudbury to take on the Wolves Saturday night in the first of two back-to-back games. Another big performance from Owen Flores stopping 60 shots against the Peterborough Petes last night in which the IceDogs lost 6-0. Niagara looked to bounce back and continue to play spoiler against teams like Sudbury who are fighting to make the playoffs with 10 games left in the season.
Starting Goaltenders: Josh Rosenzweig (NIAG), Nate Krawchuk (SBY)
Sudbury would open the scoring around 10 minutes into the game as Wolves forward Kocha Delic would beat Rosenzweig for his 17th goal of the season. It would only take the IceDogs 5 minutes to answer when a shot from the point by Andrew Wycisk would go top shelf to tie the game and Wycisk scoring his first of the season. The IceDogs would continue to battle for scoring chances to end the period.
The Wolves would score just three minutes into the second period as Quentin Musty would get a breakaway past teammate Jakub Chromiak and score past IceDogs goaltender Josh Rosenzweig for his 20th goal of the season to regain the lead. Sudbury would add another goal, this time shorthanded as Ethan Larmand would score on a breakaway to make it 3-1.
IceDogs forward Declan Waddick, who is having himself an excellent season so far, would get the team back within one, scoring his 23rd goal of the campaign, batting in a shot on the powerplay. It would be assistant captain Daniel Michaud who would tie the game for the IceDogs, beating Wolves goaltender Nate Krawchuk, off a pass from Zakary Lavoie to end the second period.
The first half of the third period would have both teams applying relentless pressure and creating multiple scoring chances. Sudbury would find a way to go ahead on the scoreboard with a shot from behind the crease by Wolves forward Landon McCallum that somehow found its way past Josh Rosenzweig. As the period was coming to an end and some late dramatics, IceDogs Forward Zakary Lavoie, shooting on the faceoff draw with three seconds left, would score five-hole to tie the game and send it to overtime.
The Wolves would prove to be too much for the IceDogs in overtime, dominating the possession and eventually forward David Goyette for the Wolves scoring a cross-crease pass to win the game for Sudbury.
The IceDogs finish off the weekend road trip, travelling to North Bay for the second half of back-to-back Central Division matchups.
